Miami Children’s Hospital Improves Employee Communication With SharePoint


The Miami Children’s Hospital needed to create a unified platform for employee communication and collaboration. They wanted the site to be managed by the hospital staff rather than its IT team. AAJ was able to create a portal that not only improved employee communication but also made it easier for the hospital staff to interact with their patients.


The Miami Children’s hospital is one of South Florida’s only licensed free practice with over 3,500 employees and nine locations throughout South Florida. Their aim is to create efficiency employee collaboration and provide impeccable patient care.

South Florida’s only licensed free-standing specialty hospital for children has thousands of employees. The organization needed a better way for their employees to communicate, as they relied primarily upon email. Each department stored their information in disconnected sites, making the content disorganized and challenging to access. Miami Children’s Hospital rolled out a SharePoint based Intranet portal to solve the problem.

This major transformation required help from an expert outside partner.  AAJ Technologies was selected to provide them the solution they needed.


AAJ Technologies’ SharePoint developers were able to consolidate hundreds of scattered individual spreadsheets and replace them with streamlined workflows. The entire staff was able to gain a consolidated view of timely hospital content. Employee communication, collaboration, efficiency and patient experience were all vastly improved.

The portal included lists such as:

  • On Call System: Displayed a real-time listing of the clinical staff
  • Crash Cart: Captured key information about the status of emergency carts

A portion of the portal focused on clinically-related information that helps the hospital optimize patient care. We included workflows that captured the latest patient information, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in real-time Census that displayed the number of hospital beds in use and other utilization statistics.


The SharePoint Portal leveraged the latest technologies to increase the impact on the hospital. The hospital’s new Intranet site rolled out smoothly and the employees provided very positive positive feedback. The new look-and-feel was a drastic change from the previous version. According to the Manager of Software and Development at Miami Children’s Hospital, AAJ’s team employed the latest practices in Website design to improve usability and it really paid off.

A SAP (Systems Applications Products) component that provides KPIs was installed. A brand-new mobile interface was also installed to vastly improve communications.
